How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost in Melbourne?

For most Melbourne homes, a Level 2 EV charger installation lands between $1,400 and $2,800 fully installed, including the charger itself. Straightforward installs near the switchboard sit at the lower end. Long cable runs, older switchboards or three-phase upgrades push the price up.

That is the short answer. The honest answer is that no two houses are the same, which is why we assess your switchboard before quoting a final number. Here is what actually moves the price, so you can read any quote you get with clear eyes.

What you are actually paying for

An EV charger install is really two jobs:

• The charger. Hardware ranges from around $700 for a solid single-phase unit to $2,000 or more for premium or three-phase chargers like the Tesla Wall Connector, Wallbox or Zappi.
• The electrical work. Cabling from your switchboard to the charging location, a dedicated circuit and protection, mounting, testing and a certificate of electrical safety.

Anyone quoting one flat number without seeing your switchboard is guessing. That guess usually gets corrected on installation day, in their favour.

The four things that change the price

1. Distance from the switchboard

A charger on the garage wall next to the board is a short run. A charger on a detached carport at the back of a block in Berwick or Cranbourne means trenching or long cable runs, and that is labour and materials.

2. Your switchboard

This is the big one. Plenty of homes across Clayton South, Springvale and Moorabbin still run older boards with ceramic fuses or no spare capacity. An EV charger draws more sustained load than almost anything else in your house, so the board has to be up to it. If yours is not, a switchboard upgrade may be needed — every board is different, so we assess yours first and include any board work in the one fixed quote.

3. Single-phase or three-phase

Most homes are single-phase, which happily runs a 7kW charger and fills a car overnight. Three-phase supply allows faster 22kW charging but costs more to install. For overnight home charging, single-phase is usually plenty.

4. The charger you choose

Smart chargers that schedule charging for off-peak rates cost more upfront and often pay for themselves within the first year or two on the right electricity plan.

Do you need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always, but it is the first thing worth checking. If your switchboard is older, has no safety switches on all circuits, or is already near capacity, it will need work before a charger can be safely added. That is not upselling, it is load maths. A proper installer checks this before quoting, not after starting.

Is a cheap install worth it?

A Level 2 charger runs a dedicated high-load circuit for hours every night, so the margin for sloppy work is zero. Whatever quote you accept, make sure it comes from a licensed electrical contractor, includes a certificate of electrical safety, and covers the switchboard assessment in writing. What about charging from a normal powerpoint?

You can, and the cable that came with your car does exactly that. But a standard powerpoint gives you roughly 10km of range per hour. A Level 2 wall charger is around five times faster, which is the difference between the car always being ready and planning your week around charging.
